It’s my favorite cake in the world. When clean eating came into my life I very sadly waved goodbye to this delicious treat. At the same time, I made myself a promise I will eat chocolate cake again. But it will be a chocolate cake designed with clean eating in mind.

It took extensive experiments which, I must say, were not that difficult to endure – I mean who does not want to test chocolate cake. I had to get creative with using leftover chocolate frosting (which is great on rice cakes by the way). But I did it. I cracked the secret to perfect clean eating chocolate cake with chocolate frosting.

Not only is this cake clean eating. It also tastes out of this world. Super chocolatey, moist and sweet, with creamy frosting. Every bite is a treat.

I must admit I sort of created a chocolate monster. This cake is so good you just can’t resist eating it. And because it is clean eating it’s almost guilt free.

That’s why it’s a perfect birthday cake, Christmas cake, new years cake, Sunday cake, treat yourself cake… I think you get the picture. Once you make this chocolate cake you will just keep making it.

Ingredients
  • CHOCOLATE CAKE:
  • 175g (1½ cups) of ground almonds
  • 35g (1/2 cup) of unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon of baking powder
  • 3 eggs
  • 4 tablespoons (30g) of light olive oil or melted coconut oil
  • 100g (1/2 cup) of pitted dates
  • 100g (1/2 cup) of raisins
  • ¾ cup (188ml) of filtered or mineral water
  • CHOCOLATE FROSTING:
  • 200g (1 cup) of pitted dates
  • 40g of unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 55g of creamed coconut
  • 1 cup (250ml) of filtered or mineral water
  • TO SERVE:
  • raspberries
  • almond flakes
Instructions
  1. CHOCOLATE CAKE:
  2. Preheat oven to 175°C / 347 °F fan.
  3. Line 17cm round cake tin with parchment paper.
  4. Soak dates and raisins in ¾ cup of water for at least 2 hours or overnight.
  5. Add dates and raisins with soaking water to a food processor with blade attachment. Add cocoa powder, eggs and oil. Blend until smooth. You can also blend everything using a hand blender.
  6. Add ground almonds and baking powder. Pulse few times until all ingredients are mixed together well.
  7. Add the batter to the cake tin and bake for 30-40 minutes or until clean toothpick.
  8. Let the cake cool before decorating it.
  9. CHOCOLATE FROSTING:
  10. Soak dates in 1 cup of water for at least two hours or overnight.
  11. Add chopped creamed coconut to dates with soaking water and heat the mixture in a microwave for 2-3 minutes until the water gets hot. Stir the mixture to melt the creamed coconut.
  12. Add the mixture to a blender with a blade attachment. Add cocoa powder and blend until smooth. You can also blend the mixture using a hand blender.
  13. Let the frosting cool down before decorating the cake. If the frosting is too thick once cooled down add 1-2 tablespoons of water to achieve the desired consistency.
  14. ASSEMBLING THE CAKE:
  15. Cut the cake in half. Place one-half on the serving plate. Add half of the frosting and spread it around the cake.
  16. Add the second half of the cake on top of the frosting. Spread the remaining frosting on the cake.
  17. Decorate with raspberries and flaked almonds.
Notes
Store the cake partially covered in a cool place for 3-4 days.
