Cocoa and cherry smoothie

Cocoa and cherry smoothie breakfast recipe - it's black forest cake in a glass! It’s sweet, chocolatey, amped with oats and bananas for extra energy boost.

Cocoa and cherry smoothie – this is the energy boost plus sweet tooth fixer all in one. This smoothie has only what’s good for you in it and it will provide the chocolate boost you need.

Cocoa and cherry smoothie is for those gloomy mornings where chocolate cravings hit. I have to say this smoothie is the only way I’m even close to chocolate these days. And I don’t miss the chocolate when I can drink smoothies like this. Cocoa gives that rich taste you want from chocolate. When you smell this smoothie you smell chocolate cake. And the cherries. It’s like black forest cake in a  glass. What can be better to start your morning and give yourself that much needed positive boost for the day.

I use frozen, pitted cherries. It’s so much easier than using fresh fruit (no fighting with pips and juice running down my arms) and I can make sure I have a supply all year long. Not only when cherries are in season. But If you happen to have access to fresh fruit, go for it. And maybe freeze some for later. And try not to eat all of them at once. Leave some for the smoothie.

Of course don’t use canned cherries – they are soaked in sugary syrup and in this form are completely useless. Natural sugar is what we want. That means eating the actual fruit. These days term -natural sugar is widely overused and is very misleading. But you can never go wrong with eating just fresh or frozen fruit.

Now the spinach. You probably read the ingredient list and had a little pause next to spinach. I get it. Spinach is not the first thing that comes to mind when you think about ingredients that go well with cocoa. This is sneaky, I have to say. It’s a way to boost your green intake, to hide the spinach in the smoothie. And it works. From the looks of this smoothie and taste, you wouldn’t be able to tell it has greens in it. It’s sweet and rich. That’s it. So add that spinach and be happy you are giving yourself all that goodness.

Give it a try. Cocoa deliciousness is only a blend away.

Fuel Your Body, Charge Your Day

Cocoa and cherry smoothie
Serves: 1

Ingredients
  • 1 cup of spinach
  • 12-16 stoned cherries (fresh or frozen)
  • 2 bananas
  • 1 heaped tablespoon of unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 3 tablespoons of oats (rolled oats or Scottish porridge oats)
  • 100 ml water
  • 150 ml milk of your choice (cow's, almond, I used oat milk)
Instructions
  1. Add spinach, oats, water and milk to blender. Blend until smooth.
  2. Add bananas, cherries, and cocoa. Blend again until smooth.
Notes
* Keep any leftovers in the fridge. Smoothie is as good next day. Just stir it before drinking - separation is normal.
* If you like your smoothie super cool freeze the fruit you are going to use instead of using ice cubes.
